A history of the significance of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France
One of the first things people think of, beside the Eiffel Tower, when they consider what to see in Paris is the Arc de Triomphe. Also called the Arc de Triumph or Arch of Triumph, this towering monument is a very popular Paris tourist attraction and historic monument that can easily be seen from many different parts of Paris.

The Arch of Triumph stands in the middle of the area known as the Place Charles de Gaulle (Place de l'Étoile). The Arch stands as a tribute to those who fought during the Napoleonic Wars, but also serves as a reminder of those who bravely fought in other battles and wars throughout the history of Paris. The inside and front of the Arch are inscribed with the names of wars and generals as reminders. The Arch also serves as a tomb for the Unknown Soldier during WWI.

This monument is one of several that are included in a traditional Paris tour. It is part of the historic axis that visits monuments in a pattern that travels to the outskirts of Paris. It was originally built in 1806 and was designed by Jean Chalgrin. It is the second largest monument of its kind (a historical Arch) in the world.

Many sculptures are an integral part of the Arch, including classic and modern busts celebrating various French heroes, events, and parts of French history. However, the tomb dedicated to those who died without being identified during WWI remains one of the most popularly visited parts of the Arch. The tomb is lit with an eternal flame, one of the first of its kind in Paris in many years.

Visitors are permitted to climb the Arch via a lift or nearly 300 stairs. They can then view Paris from the top of the Arch of Triumph. The best time to visit the Arch is usually during the off-season, as the lines to the stairs/lift can be tremendous during the summer and early fall months. Weather is not a large issue at the Arch, but one should plan to view the Arch in good weather if a trip to the top is planned.
